soonoak wood >>> july - september 2017

East Bay artist Soonoak Wood celebrates the hidden magnificence of Californian architecture and its surroundings. Her work aims to push back on an increasingly fast paced, commercialized and tech centered world by highlighting the beauty and craftsmanship of times past. The time intensive painting process she uses reflects the ideals of patience and thoughtful observation. Many of the subjects she chooses to paint show her fascination with industrial arts and typography of the early 20th century.

Wood grew up in Seoul, South Korea and spent five years studying art, jewelry design and illustration in Florence, Italy. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Her cross-cultural experience gives her a unique perspective on art and has become the base for her working process, revealing itself in the vivid color and brilliant details.

She currently lives in El Cerrito with her husband and two young daughters.
Meet Soonoak and see her work at the exhibition’s opening reception on July 20 from 6 to 9 p.m.
