Layers…because let’s face it winter’s coming! ha ha, I know, not really where I live now, but still it can get chilly at night here in the SF Bay Area. Layers are our friend and can keep all of our cute stylish summer looks somewhat cool-weatherized, or what many of you fashionistas would call transitional dressing. It is a beautiful thing and really does make life easier. Almost like making two wardrobes out of one.
I recently stopped by Rare Bird (check them out here!) to do some styling, and of course snap some photos of my looks, my favorite thing to do. Rare Bird is actually a boutique, gallery & studio located in Oakland, California, which I happened to be crushing on since before I even moved here. Their Instagram (found here) is insanely inspiring, creative and fun! I was hooked pretty early on!
Rare Bird stocks mostly local wares, contemporary, vintage & even handmade clothing, drool-worthy jewelry and hard-to-pass up decor for the home (see the boombox featured here- that’s one of them pieces!). And on top of the exceptional and unique shopping experience they offer, they are now opening a second location where they offer workshops. YES!!!! DIY at its finest. Me- I’m diving in headfirst to the sewing and the Indigo & shibori dyeing workshops, because they look insanely good, and thank goodness- approachable!
Rare Bird was founded in 2010 by artist, Erica Skone-Rees (read all about her here), who I got to goof around with in front of the lens and in-store while I styled some looks. She truly exudes goodness and is a creative genius, who has created an inspiring shopping experience that celebrates well crafted goods (and did I mention SO MANY beautiful clothes!).
Here I share a simple look, but a favorite look because denim never goes out of style. And the fall fashion forecast predicts denim will continue on strong right through the fall- especially denim on denim looks! (Prices on featured items found below)
I started with my own boyfriend jeans, a braided leather belt and a cashmere black tank, paired with Rare Bird’s vintage clogs.
I added a vintage felt hat. I love the height of it for an extra eye-grabbing look- in case you want to make a style statement.
Next, I added a vintage denim coat, which happens to mirror another one of fall’s current trends- Edwardian-style sleeves (extra points for that one). By the way, this little denim topper would also be great over a maxi dress, a slip dress, a jumpsuit, or even a more substantial piece like a cashmere sweater for those much cooler days ahead.
Lastly, for the piece de resistance, I added the MAKBUILT retro luggage boombox, made by one of Rare Bird’s in house artists, Matt (more on him here & here)! This not only completes my stylish look but makes for a stylish party; if I were to host one- I am now all set!
