Design 101: The Rectangle Dress
In this series of two 3 hour classes each student will learn how to sketch and design a custom dress based on the simple rectangle shape. Dresses will be hand stitched using the Japanese Sashiko stitching technique. Examples will be shown in class and the design possibilities are endless with this simple shape. No sewing machine is required!
Stick with Woven Cotten or Linen with a two-way print design or a plaid that is symmetrical or looks the same in both directions or solid fabric. Stay away from knits.
Fabric should be 45"-60" wide. Use 60" for more volume for a larger body type or if you want a Japanese oversized look.
Simple Math To Obtain Needed Yardage:
Measure from the center of your back at the base of your neck to your desired length. Multiply this number by 2 plus 9" for your seams, hems, and wiggle room
Example: 36" x 2 = 72" + 9" = 2.25 Yards of Fabric
