Kato quit her day job grind 3 years ago and is delighted to be working as a full time fine artist and craft jeweler in West Oakland. Born and bred in the bay area, she is a third generation Californian and has always been inspired by and protective of our incredible landscape. Kato studied painting, printmaking and scientific illustration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA 2008), and is currently studying Gemology with the Gemological Institute of America (GG 2018)
Kato Lawton's ongoing "Arbitrary Boundaries" series is ethereal and mysterious. These densely-dotted watercolor compositions are emotional maps, giving form to the ebb and flow of connection and disconnection involved in friendships, romances, powerful but fleeting moments with a stranger, or the severing of ties between individuals. Some of the works are expressions of how we identify in groups, the alliances we make and the ways certain coalitions and social aversions then impact our physical world, reflected in the surrealist landscape paintings.
Meet Kato & check out her work at our Art Opening Reception on Thursday, October 20th, 6-9pm.
