Suki is the creative alter ego and artistic enterprise of Suzanne Baker, an artist and scavenger creating vibrant, graphic and occasionally creepy textile and multimedia art in her forest studio near the Russian River.
I’m so excited about this latest, deeply personal collection of work that I’m debuting at Rare Bird, which I’m playfully calling “altar boxes for heathens.” Each box is a stand-alone art piece that is the result of a conversation between me and the reclaimed source materials, which might include cigar boxes, old drawers, album art, antique books, doll parts, patina-ed metal, improvised bud vases, snake vertebrae and other natural objects. Each is a miniature world that invites you to join the conversation by adding flowers, figurines, treasured rocks or other items that animate you. Born of my desire to create devotional artifacts that I can believe in, these altar boxes reimagine Mexican nichos, Roman Catholic retablos, and Russian icon paintings for the secular soul.
